Duties

The United States Space Force (USSF) Space Systems Command (SSC) at Vandenberg Space Force Base is searching for an Explosives Safety Specialist (NH-0017-03, GS 12/13 Equivalent).



Description:
Vandenberg Space Force Base is located on the Central Coast of California where the climate is mild. Most homes are not equipped with air conditioning because the climate is so wonderful. There are nearby local collages for higher education and great scenery along the coast and inland roadways through wine country. Work consists of being on the cutting edge of space launch technology and near weekly launches. VSFB has 40 miles of pristine coastline and occupies nearly 100,000 acres.


The ideal candidate will have performed Wing/Base/Station level Weapons Safety program management or Explosives duties for at home station or deployed location and developed and submitted > 6 Explosives Site Plans/Quantity Distance Safety Submissions/Hybrid Safety Submission and a few Risk Assessments, Waivers, Exemptions and/or Deviations. Knowledge of Explosives Safety Siting Software is highly desired. Experience with managing Nuclear Surety is sought after.


A background in working with large missiles, Space Launch vehicles and payload processes and managing all associated safety aspects is desirable.



Key Skills and Abilities:
1. Expert knowledge of established weapons and explosives safety principles, practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and current legislative issues as they relate to the military installation weapons and explosives safety program; the requirements, methods, and techniques of accident and mishap investigation, analysis, resolution of safety problems, and formal reporting procedures and risk assessment methods and techniques for evaluation of weapons and explosives safety risks.
2. Expert knowledge of complex explosives safety construction standards, methods, practices, techniques, materials, and equipment to determine compliance with regulations and standards.
3. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and determine resource requirements; determine goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinate with other organizations; monitor progress, and evaluate outcomes.
5. Ability to identify problems and use sound judgment and decisions to generate and evaluate alternatives and make recommendations.

  • This position is on-site and eligible for telework, 2-4 days per pay period.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • Employee needs to obtain and maintain approval to access the portfolio of Special Access Programs required to perform daily duties.
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of TDY assignments.
  • May be required to work overtime on an unscheduled or emergency basis.
  • Pre-employment physical required.
  • PCS and relocation funding are available.
